As an educator for 20+ years, there wasn't a year that went by that I got butterflies in my stomach leading up to the first day of school. Meeting the person on the first day of school and seeing the transformation of each individual as the year goes on is the best feeling. I've always thought it was extremely important to give our new "family" time to get to know each other for the first week or so of school. I allow my student's to make the rules we are all going to follow. I give them opportunities to do activities to help them learn about who they'll be spending the year with, and most important, they always want to know all about me. By spending our first days doing these things and practicing how we want our year to be sets the tone for each student. It also gives me the opportunity to learn the likes and dislikes of the students. I do not teach to the grade level. I teach to the needs of each student. One student might not need to spend time learning a certain skill because they've already learned it, so I accommodate and differentiate the instruction needed because they are ready to move on. The same goes for my learners that need some additional work on something considered according to the standards, "they should have learned this last year". That makes it my responsibility to be sure they learn that skill before moving on. If I ignored it and thought, "Oh, well, they didn't learn it last year. That's not my fault." That's when you are allowing them to "fall through the cracks." If an educator does that and ignores that student's need, that student from then on will always be behind and will struggle all the way until their high school years. That's not happening on my watch. I love and care for each and every child I'm responsible for educating.
